What Is the Difference Between Western and Vedic Astrology?
Two systems, both valid, built on different foundations. Western astrology — which is what most people in the english speaking world grew up with — uses the tropical zodiac, based on the seasons, with Aries beginning at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology, the ancient system from India also called Jyotish, uses the sidereal zodiac based on the actual position of the constellations in the sky. Because of a phenomenon called the precession of the equinoxes the tropical and sidereal zodiacs have drifted apart by about 23 degrees over thousands of years, which is why many people find their Vedic sun sign is one sign earlier than their western one. Neither system is wrong — they are asking different questions. Western astrology is primarily psychological, describing who you are and how you are wired. Vedic astrology is primarily predictive and karmic, describing your dharma and the timing of events in your life. Stari works with western astrology — seven years of readings built on the tropical zodiac and the psychological framework that has proven itself across thousands of charts.
